The roots have grown
The tree is tall
Yet wisdom knows
That leaves must fall.

For days are done
The summer's past
When Mother's love
Will hold them fast.

And then the wind
That set them free
Caressed the branch
And kissed the tree.

For leaves that turn
From green to gold
Embrace the earth
And leave the fold.

The autumn bids the
Roots to rest
The birds have flown
From empty nest.
