WHITE HALLS

They walk the long white halls
Waiting for the end
The realization that this is happening
Has yet to sink in
She hangs on by sheer will
Why couldn't it be someone else?
All she can do is try and comfort,
There's no real way she can help.
Her mother sobs in denial all day
And her father says nothing at all.
She is only one of the many
Who walk the long white halls.
This isn't something that happens
Except in books and TV
It doesn't happen in real life
Or at least that's what she used to believe.
But then she came to visit
Her eighteen year old friend
Hang on by sheer will
While they all wait for the end.
So day after day she watches her grow sicker
Because she can't help at all
All she can do is hope and pray
And walk the long white halls.
