WARRIOR AND FRIEND DEER

Warrior heard the deep cry
As the arrow struck
Straight and true;
No whoop of victory or excited cheer
Broke through the silent air.

He approached, feet careful and soft
Mouth set grim in face
Of somber hue.
Ever so gently he cradled her head
Looking deep in lipid brown eyes.

"Forgive me, Friend Deer, for causing you pain
The intent was not pride
But need of my tribe.
You will be honored with dignity,
Forever thankful are we to you."

Friend Deer did not fight or fear
But nuzzled Warrior's face
Heaved a sigh and closed her eyes.
Warrior's heart sank with pain
Of the friend he just lost.
