LAMENT
The light of her soul was fading,
As stars when dawn appears;
The sparkle in his eyes was gone,
Immersed in silent tears.
He sought to know the reason why
Such beauty was profaned,
And searched and searched within her heart,
But no true answer gained.
Love's flame that had so brightly burned
Was dying in her breast;
Soon she faded from his life
To end his hopeless quest.
Why she went he never knew,
Till by a fire he grieved;
For as he knelt and fed the flames,
The answer he received!
