SONG SPARROW

They're having a meeting on her back porch
All talking at once, no protocol
Heads bounce--beaks move rapidly
Shoulders touch--eye sparkle.

Some huddle together
It's raining and cold
But conversation continues to flow
Children? Weather? Politics?

One sits alone
Away from the group
Gaze focused on mountains beyond
Independence? Disagreement?

A sound from the garden
A movement inside
The meeting ends suddenly
Swift flight to the sky.
